Here is another of my Christmas present stitching - this time for my father-in-law. I wanted to use these monograms to try out new techniques on small projects, plus they make excellent gifts.
This time out I decided to try my hand at some woven stitches - using my Crewel Intentions book by Hazel Blomkamp, which includes several woven stitch patterns. There is an ulterior motive to this - I've ordered one of her kits from this book, which includes quite a lot of woven stitch (and needle-lace, which I'm also a little worried about doing).
Also, I wanted to do something monochrome for this one, and though the hounds-tooth style pattern would suit the recipient.
I've cheated slightly, using an evenweave fabric rather than a calico or linen, as I wanted to make sure that my warp and wefts were parallel. Once I got the hang of it, it cam together relatively quickly, and then I outlined in stem stitch to firm out the shape a little. All worked in DMC Perle 8.
Again I have wrapped a 4 inch frame in grosgrain ribbon for finishing, and the back has been secured with a running stitch to hold the tension of the fabric.
I have one final (and definitely late) Christmas monogram I'm working on, as well as an idea for another for Otto the dog, which I'd like to do in silk shading to reflect his wiry coat. It might fail spectacularly though!
Tomorrow I'm going into London with my Mum to go to the haberdashery at Liberty, so will hopefully pick up some more inspiration there.
