WIP - Tulip Monogram

To practice my stitching techniques I have a cunning plan to do some small samplers in the form of monograms over the next few months, which will hopeful also make some nice homemade gifts for my family for Christmas.

In my researching around I found Mary Corbet's Needle n Thread site which I've been running through for inspiration, ideas and patterns over the last week. It really is a wealth of information.

I thought I'd start out using her Tulip monogram alphabet, as my mother is a big fan of the flower, from her eBook of monograms available here

I'm also testing out using my iPad as a light box to transfer a pattern directly from a pdf onto my fabric - we'll see how that goes...

Update: Using an iPad as a light-box doesn't work at all, so I need to print out my pattern. In the meantime I've started working a little stitch sampler/guide for myself.

Update 4/10: I've finally started on this - I traced the (finally) printed out pattern onto a piece of calico using a washout pencil and using my iPad as a backing light to get a better view of the print.

Starting out with a long and short stitch in a variation of gold-ish colours for the filling of the monogram.  You can get a pretty good coverage fairly quickly with this stitch - aside from the faffing on getting the pattern onto the fabric the above is about half an hours stitching.

The plan is to stem stitch and outline (in blue) and stem of the tulip (in green)and use padded satin stitch for the flower and leaves. I think the flower will be red to give a slightly Jacobean look to the colour scheme, but I may change my mind as I carry on.
